When Business Feels Uncertain: Where to Focus Your Energy as a Business Owner

When Business feels uncertain: Where to focus your energy as a Business Owner
When Business feels uncertain: Where to focus your energy as a Business Owner

You open your laptop, knowing what you should be doing in theory… and instead find yourself staring at the screen, clicking buttons, moving between tabs checking things that don’t really matter, and before you know it three hours have passed.

That thing you actually sat down to do. Forgotten.

Maybe you’ve noticed yourself:

  • Re-writing the same piece of content five  times and still not posting it.

  • Checking your bank account more than usual

  • Avoiding replying to enquiries because you just don’t know what to say

  • Doom scrolling that started as inspiration, but ended up on Tik Tok trends that have nothing to do with you, or your business.

When business feels uncertain, this is often what it looks like.

This is how it shows up in our behaviour.

Concentration drops, decisions feel harder.

Things that might have once felt easy, or simple now take more effort.

Without realising it, you start to hesitate…overthink…or avoid things altogether.

It’s not that you have suddenly become unmotivated, or that you don’t care about your business anymore.

It’s a very human response to being under pressure.

Not a personal failing…even when it feels like it.

Why this happens?

When we are facing any kind of uncertainty, whether that’s in our business, our personal lives or just the general state of the world, our brain starts scanning for problems.

It looks for what might go wrong

What needs fixing

What you might have missed

What you need to do, to keep yourself safe.

That might sound helpful…but it comes at a cost.

The attention you would normally have to be creative, gets pulled into worry.

So instead of moving forward, you might find yourself circling the same thoughts, the same decisions and the same tasks.

Which means not only are you just running your business anymore.

Your brain is trying to manage the uncertainty around it at the same time.

And that takes up far more capacity than most people realise.

Why this feels so intense as a business owner.

When life adds pressure in the background, the responsibility of running your business doesn’t wait.

Not in the same way an employed job might, there is no manager to go to, no colleagues who can help reduce pressure temporarily and no paid sick leave.

Add in unpredictable income.

Clients that need you no matter what.

All while navigating your own life, your own energy, your own capacity.

It’s no wonder that that pressure can feel so intense…and all consuming.

There are seasons of Business that feel exciting.

And there are also seasons where life demands more than you have to give.

Which is why, learning to work with yourself in these moments can help steady the ship until pressure eases off.

How to steady the ship in a sea of uncertainty

When things feel uncertain, the temptation can be to do more, spread yourself more thinly as a way to try and gain a sense of control.

But, more often than not, the answer is the opposite.

It’s about simplifying

Slowing things down slightly

And focusing on what feels steady… even when that feels counterintuitive.

If you are in a season of change, or uncertainty here, are three areas to consider to help you steady yourself, before deciding your next steps.

Anchors:

Coming back to simple, repeatable actions.

The kind you don’t have to overthink.

This might look like:

  • Creating a loose structure to your day or week, so you are not constantly deciding what to do next.

  • Deciding ahead of time what your one or two priorities are for the day.

  • Choosing simple, familiar tasks instead of starting something new.

Support:

Often when things get hard, the temptation can be to pull back and retreat inwards instead of leaning on the support you have around you from friends, family or colleagues.

  • Talking things through with someone you trust who understands your business.

  • Asking for a second opinion when you are stuck in your own head.

  • Letting someone help, even when you would rather do things on your own.

Letting go:

Possibly the hardest thing to do is deciding what isn’t a priority right now.

It can feel like you are giving up, or taking the easy way out.

But often, reducing the pressure you are under isn’t about doing less for the sake of it, it’s about creating space so you can actually function.

This might look like:

  • Pausing a project or plan that isn’t essential right now.

  • Letting something be good enough instead of perfect.

  • Dropping a non-urgent task so that you can focus on what really matters.

A steadier way forward

If this is where you are right now, please know you aren’t alone.

With so much of what we see online being the highlight reel, it can feel like you’re the only person who is navigating choppy water on your own.

When you’re working through a period of uncertainty…it’s important to remember that that comes with a different set of demands.

So Business might look different for a while.

Slower, simpler and more focused on steadiness than fast growth.

If you’re finding this hard to navigate on your own, having the right kind of support can make this feel a lot less heavy.

You’re always welcome to get in touch.
